MARK "HUMBLE" HOLLINGSWORTH

I worked for Weir Minerals for over 25 years in the foundry melting department, starting at the age of 21. However, in 2020, I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease after enduring months of debilitating back pain that began in early 2018. By 2020-2021, my condition had worsened to the point where I was unable to work. Despite my employer's efforts to support me, I ultimately had to be laid off due to medical reasons. I struggled to walk and sit upright for more than an hour, and soon after, I became bedbound for 4-6 months.

During this difficult time, I faced immense challenges, including severe pain and numbness that sometimes prevented me from getting out of bed. In 2022-2023, my local council approved adaptations to my home, allowing me to sleep downstairs and install a stairlift and a wet room for easier access to facilities. For months, I had to wash in bed or at the sink downstairs and relied on a commode.

I inquired about a power chair, but unfortunately, I didn’t qualify for assistance, as many charities in the UK only provide support for those who are fully paralyzed or have undergone surgical procedures. This led me to a dark place, and I struggled with depression, feeling as though my situation was only going to worsen. The combination of my medical issues and the side effects of my medications took a toll on my body, leading to complications with my stomach and kidneys, as well as a diagnosis of emphysema after contracting COVID-19.

Last year, I reached a point where I contemplated taking my own life, believing it would relieve my family of the burden I felt I had become. However, on the day I had planned to end my life, my grandson unexpectedly visited and spent the day with me. His presence reminded me of the importance of life and the love that still surrounded me. From that moment, I realized I needed to fight for my life.

In my journey toward recovery, I discovered the XRP community and the XRPL by chance. This community welcomed me with open arms, providing me with a sense of belonging and purpose. I am grateful to so many individuals and the meme projects that have given me something to look forward to each day. I hold onto the hope that, when I achieve financial stability, I will be able to access the proper care I need privately, as the NHS in the United Kingdom faces increasing challenges.
